The Illinois State Geological Survey maintains an online database of well permits in Illinois (link below). The codes for the type of wells are:
Oil = oil
Gas – gas
WSU = water supply well
WI = water injection
CBM = coal bed methane well
CMM = abandoned coal mine methane
