What We Do

Protecting Southern Illinois takes more than responding when a crisis occurs.

SAFE works year-round to stay informed, keep our communities connected, and make sure local voices are heard when decisions affecting our region are made.

SAFE keeps watch on fracking, oil and gas development, permits, legislation, and other emerging threats that could affect Southern Illinois. When action is needed, we work to make sure local communities know what is happening and how they can respond.

We help Southern Illinoisans understand complex environmental, health, regulatory, and energy issues by sharing research, news, public records, and reliable information in accessible ways.

SAFE gives Southern Illinois residents a stronger voice in decisions affecting their communities. We participate in public processes, communicate with decision-makers, organize community action, and advocate for protections for our water, land, health, and quality of life.
