Letter: Keep fracking industry away from Illinois

Posted Mar 28, 2013 @ 10:02 PM

There’s a very good reason why the petroleum lobby is pushing hydraulic fracking approval through the Illinois legislature so quickly this session.

They know that the longer they wait, the more the truth will come out, and the more people will demand they stay far, far away from Illinois.

Hydraulic fracking is proving to be a nightmare for the communities it affects. Citizens have had their water sources become contaminated, their local environment ravaged and their property rights violated while government agencies were powerless to intervene.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to find a scientific source (not employed by fracking companies) that disagrees with the fact that fracking is unpredictable, unstable and potentially disastrous.

The problem citizens face in Illinois is timing — studies on the impacted communities haven’t had time to be published or reviewed, and the EPA’s own review of the process is still a year in the making.

This is why the fracking industry is pushing so hard, so quickly. If these studies become available before they can set up shop in Illinois, then the message from the people of Illinois will be abundantly clear: Go away fracking industry, and don’t let the windmills hit you on your way out.
