Chicago TV To Air “Stop The Frack Attack”

Labor Beat presents this video produced by Greene Chair Productions about a serious environmental issue affecting working people…and everybody.

The controversial, dangerous natural gas extraction process, high-volume hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is coming to Illinois. Members of Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing our Environment (S.A.F.E.) and hundreds of supporters gathered in Chicago for a “Stop the Frack Attack” rally, against high-volume fracking in Illinois and spread the word: “Water For Farming and Not For Fracking!”

Southern Illinoisans to Urge Governor, Legislators to Halt Hydraulic Fracturing in Illinois

S.A.F.E. calls for Governor Quinn to use every tool at his disposal to halt the issuance of high-volume fracking permits by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. SAFE also calls on legislators to pass a moratorium on high-volume fracking until the people of Illinois can be assured that our land, water, air and the health of our families and animals will be safe. S.A.F.E. wants people to be aware that, at present, there are no regulations at the federal, state or local levels to prevent gas and oil companies from destroying the environment and the public’s health once they get control over people’s mineral rights.

Landowners in Illinois have been bullied and lied to by the industry to pressure them into signing leases. There are numerous reported cases in other states, where hydraulic fracking has been associated with poisoned wells, streams and aquifers, that have sickened residents, livestock and wild animals.

The industry in Illinois already acts with legal impunity but the “new improved” version of hydraulic fracking is much more dangerous than the old method, and it is about to begin in Southern Illinois.

In Illinois, we are experiencing severe droughts. The oil and gas companies use millions of gallons of water per well during fracking operations which is permanently taken out of the hydrological cycle and stored as toxic wastewater. We cannot afford fracking in Illinois if we want to keep our water safe for agriculture and human use.
